I'm on the edge of crying. I need help.
I'm trying to write an essay on 1984 by George Orwell and I have no idea what the hell to write. I'm not asking you guys to write it for me, I'm only asking for ideas or tips.

Thanks.

DONE! [13 Nov 2006|12:14am]

sourduck17
Bonjour mes ami(e)s!

I decided to read chapters 2 through the end of George Orwell's "1984" all in one shot. It did take me about 4 and a half hours but it was worth it. Very exciting!

I have just a few things to confess. I did not read the Brotherhood book. Sorry but it was just too boring and I knew it wouldn't effect the storyline all that much. My reasoning for this is that Julia falls asleep while Winston is reading it to her. Hey, if she's allowed to fall asleep and not listen then I can skip it without reading it. I also did not read the whole explanation about Newsspeak. I didn't think it was important to me because I already understood. "Spoiler alert!!!" I did like the ending. It was good and it seemed to give me a sense of closure, but still there could have been more.

Anyway, does anyone know what might have been Julia's "Room 101" if Winston's was rats? I was thinking about it and I couldn't think of anything. I read this on a website and I thought it was hilarious: What if Julia was Winston's sister? LOL! How funny would that be.

Anywho, I might come back with more arguments and such.
Leave me some comments. I love 'em.
Jessica.

Hi! My name is Jessica! I'm reading "1984" for fun. I really am liking it so far. I was wondering if someone could just help me figure a few things. I have a few questions and since none of my friends are reading it I have no one to chat about it with.

Please no spoilers. I just finished reading chapter ONE.
If anyone is interested in answering a few questions, let me know!

Lookin' for Love in All the Wrong Places

Two long years have passed since the beginning of Bush's illegal, immoral, and unsanctioned-by-France invasion of Iraq. According to the flashing neon tote-board in Michael Moore's living room, over 1,500 troops have died without dignity. Goddess knows we've tried everything in the book to make the Shrub take his war toys and go home. Petitions. Protest marches. Organized hissy fits. Yet despite all our feminine hysterics, the chimp simply won't listen to reason.

But do not despair, for our beloved MoxieGrill's(http://www.moxiegrrrl.com) life partner, Kid Bastard, has the perfect plan to finally convince the swaggering fascist cowboy chimp to surrender his so-called "War on Terror":

"I am going to marry a man. And I'm going to encourage everyone to marry someone of their own gender. And if we can get enough people, we can have one big ceremony on the White House lawn.Read more...Collapse )

YES! Die with Dignity! DIE! DIE!!!!
Republicans in Congress took a brief time-out from their Major League Baseball Fanfest to force their religious beliefs on everyone today. Backed by conservative Christian fanatics, GOP lifemongers pulled out all the stops trying to prolong Schiavo's pain and suffering. Michael Schiavo's, I mean. The hell that poor man's been through since the cash from the malpractice suit ran out! But it looks like the last legal roadblack has been hurdled, and Mark McGwire ceremonially yanked out her feeding tube this afternoon to wild cheers from Death with Dignity advocates and Cardinals fans alike. Ann Coulter is a Middle-Aged Infidel

The Eva Braun of the conservative right has done it again. In an unbelievable display of insensitivity, syndicated Bush shill Ann Coulter referred to 109 year-old Lebanese immigrant Helen Thomas as an "old Arab", without at least prefacing her slur with the adjective "venerable". Learning to love Big Brother
George W. Bush channels George Orwell
Daniel Kurtzman

Sunday, July 28, 2002

Here's a question for constitutional scholars: Can a sitting president be charged with plagiarism?

As President Bush wages his war against terrorism and moves to create a huge homeland security apparatus, he appears to be borrowing heavily, if not ripping off ideas outright, from George Orwell. The work in question is "1984, " the prophetic novel about a government that controls the masses by spreading propaganda, cracking down on subversive thought and altering history to suit its needs. It was intended to be read as a warning about the evils of totalitarianism -- not a how-to manual.

Granted, we're a long way from resembling the kind of authoritarian state Orwell depicted, but some of the similarities are starting to get a bit eerie.

PERMANENT WAR
In "1984," the state remained perpetually at war against a vague and ever- changing enemy. The war took place largely in the abstract, but it served as a convenient vehicle to fuel hatred, nurture fear and justify the regime's autocratic practices.

Bush's war against terrorism has become almost as amorphous. Although we are told the president's resolve is steady and the mission clear, we seem to know less and less about the enemy we are fighting. What began as a war against Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda quickly morphed into a war against Afghanistan, followed by dire warnings about an "Axis of Evil," the targeting of terrorists in some 50 to 60 countries, and now the beginnings of a major campaign against Iraq. Exactly what will constitute success in this war remains unclear, but the one thing the Bush administration has made certain is that the war will continue "indefinitely." Read more...Collapse )

Bush Court Overturns Roe v. Wade
When I first read today's horrifying headline "SUPREME COURT BANS DEATH PENALTY FOR YOUTHS!" I nearly plotzed.

"OMIGODDESS! BUSH HAS DONE IT!" I screamed at my confused cat. "THAT FASCIST SHRUB HAS OVERTURNED ROE V. WADE!"

But after reading further, I breathed a deep sigh of relief. Thankfully, the court ruling only applies to youths who have committed horrible, ghastly crimes - usually through no fault of their own. Womyn can still purge their bodies of intestinal parasites without the Ashcroft Gestapo hauling them off to Gitmo.Read more...Collapse )

Hey, I really suck at this running shit thing. I like to feel important , but I don't want to do anything. I haven't been on here for a while and I usually don't come to this community because I thought it died. I have failed to realize not everyone sucks and you wonderful people have so graciouslly up held this community. I'm so happy I could puke up pretty pink flowers, rainbows, and fluffy puff and stuff! Anyway, you guys seem really cool I'm really going to get involved with this community sometime... Sometime. I was going to comment on everyone's little introduction thing, but I didn't feel like it so I thought I'd just write an entry because I'm a lazy bitch.
Anyway... You're awesome, I really did read everyone's introduction thing and I liked them. (i.e. the anti-mormon, Radiohead, Ani Difranco, the articles, Misfits, the usage of teh quote "the grass is always greener on the other side." etc.) They were all wonderful I kind of peed on myself I was so happy... And because I'm very tired.

-Your parents? - Eh my dad's fionce is a good source of money, but not convorsation. Very closed-minded. Not that she's in love with the government or anything, but I can imagine her telling me two and two make five for the sake of her being right and me wrong.

6. How did you find this community? - 1984 is one of my interests; I've just finished it today. He loved BIg Brother. What a riveting last sentence.

It speaks volumes about the forgiving nature of our French and German friends that they don't run the Shrub out of Europe on a rail, especially in regards to recent events. Last week, Bush asked for $100 million to help improve the Polish Army. Yup, the KILBASA KORPS! Congress must have thought it was some sort of sick Polack joke. The nation that caused WW2 will have new tanks and planes, and the once mighty French army that led the allies to victory in Europe lies in disuse and disrepair. Even De Gaulle's cherished 4th Armoured Division can no longer afford to feed it's goats, let alone armour them. It's no wonder the whole world hates us, but it explains Bush's weeklong European suck-up-athon. It's time to pay off his corrupt little minions, while at the same time wheedling for support from those he spent 4 years insulting with his swaggering. Read more...Collapse )

Bush is my hero
I’m sure the title of my letter will catch the eye of many in our community. I’m not afraid to stand up for our president. I am actually thrilled to see Bush serving a second term.
In fact, I am quite tired of reading nothing more than liberal hogwash and “Bush bashing” stories.
Whether it be Social Security or homeland security, the liberals offer only criticism. At least Bush makes a concerted effort to offer solutions. The liberals instantly criticize any idea Republicans offer. The only tactic liberals can offer is name calling, and they’ll do it over and over again until they are blue in the face. They somehow think that resorting to childish measures will help them win any argument. Give me a break!
If you’re not a part of the solution, well then, you’re part of the problem.
Personally, I am an Eagle Scout. That means I am part of an organization that teaches young people to think for themselves. I pride myself as a life member of the NRA. I attend church services and believe that homosexuality is wrong. I even have a Bush screensaver on my cell phone!
For those of you who are liberal, I’m almost certain my story is making you squirm.
Too bad. I have no compassion for those who give America a black eye.
Heed my advice: You can’t build a reputation based on what you’re going to do. May God continue to bless Bush and the United States of America.
Brock C. Ostrander,
Denton

please, discuss.
personally, i threw up on myself. the whole thing was completely irrelvant from paragraph to paragraph. uhm, yeah, i find it really, really intresting that you have a picture of bush on your cell phone...

Stirring the cauldron
The Silent Muslim Majority IS the Problem
By Nonie Darwish
FrontPageMagazine.com | January 7, 2005

I am overwhelmed with sadness over the state of the Muslim world. I am looking at the photograph of an Iranian woman about to be stoned to death in Iran, buried to her waste in dirt to keep her from running away.

A few weeks ago, I read about a 14 year-old Iranian boy who died after receiving 85 lashes for the ‘sin’ of eating in public in the month of Ramadan. Salah Uddin Choudhury has been in prison for one year in Bangladesh for the ‘crime’ of urging his nation to recognize Israel and advocating interfaith dialogue among equals as well as warning against the growing power of Islamists in Bangladesh.
